My Winter Look feat. We Love Colors

A big smile graced my face when We Love Colors e-mailed me last fall. "I'd love to try them," was my response to their review request, but I really wanted to write, "OMG, yes, pretty please!" I've admired We Love Colors ever since I saw a blog review a couple years ago. With a wide selection of styles, colors, and sizes, what is there not to admire? Lately I've worn my tights with lightweight dresses, such as last year's highly coveted Peter Pan Collar Dress from Asos Curve, and flat boots to get me through the chilly temperatures and long work hours.

My Miracle Worker

Why didn't I use Rose Salve sooner? I've heard friends and beauty gurus rave about it for years, but I didn't try it until I purchased it last weekend. Again, I ask myself: WHY DIDN'T I USE THIS SOONER?

My cuticles have been really dry lately because of freezing temperatures. For the last two nights, I spread a small dab of balm on them and woke to a miracle this morning. Not only were my cuticles moisturized, but the two hangnails on my thumb were completely gone. Amazing! I've used vaseline in the past to condition my skin, but it's never worked as fast as Rose Salve. It must be the rose extract that makes all the difference. If your skin is in need of major moisture, pick up a tin at Bath & Body Works for only $5.50. You won't regret it.

Who loves trying new clothing brands? I know I do. I'm always on the hunt for new brands to try, so I was happy when Shop Translated contacted me earlier this fall to review their collection. I chose the "Jackie O" dress in chocolate/antique as it's unlike anything else in my closet. The color and unique print caught my attention, as did the high waist line. I love a high waist! The only gripe I have with this dress is the lining. There is none, which makes it clingy to my thighs while walking. Other than that, Shop Translated gets the Fashion, Love, & Martinis seal of approval.

Sequins, Fur, and Animals! Oh My!

I've been a fan of sparkly, shiny things for as long as I can remember. Growing up I had a penchant for glittery jelly shoes, glistening Lisa Frank school supplies, and mom's shiny red lipstick. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when Pennington's sent me a sequined top from their holiday 2011 collection. The glitzy top, which comes in sizes 14 - 32, is available on penningtons.com in three different colors.

I'm very happy with the quality of the top. Sometimes sequins are poorly applied or itchy on the skin, but Pennington's did a great job on the application and lining of the top. Please believe there are no loose sequins or itchy skin here! I'm also really happy the top arrived just in time for Downtown Reedley's Ladies' Night Out.

As some of you may know, I'm Downtown Reedley's Social Media Manager. Each spring and fall we create a night devoted to women and their girlfriends. There's shopping, giveaways, food, wine, and martinis (my favorite part of the night, of course). This fall's theme was "Flaunt Your Wild Side," which called for animal print, feather boas, and live animals. Yup, a real zebra, wolf, and skunk were parading throughout downtown. How amazing is that? My assistant Nancy and I took as many pictures as possible with them because we'll probably never get the chance to do something so cool ever again.

How many of you have heard of Penningtons? Don't worry, you're not alone. I hadn't heard of the Canadian plus size retailer until last week. Now that I've discovered they're one of the most popular plus shops in Canada, I'm a little bummed I didn't know about them sooner.

Penningtons sent me a few previews from their upcoming holiday look book. I love what I've seen so far. There's sparkle, a curve-enhancing wrap-like dress, and fun separates that can be paired with existing pieces in your wardrobe. Plus, their prices are reasonable and their size range is impressive. Hello sizes 14 to 32! I'm excited to see the rest of their new line when it debuts in the coming weeks, but, for now, this sneak peek will have to do.

Thank you for your heartfelt comments, tweets, and messages throughout the month of September and my last post. Things are returning to normal -- well, a new normal -- and with that, comes the opportunity to heal our wounds. Again, thank you for your thoughts and prayers. I love you guys and gals!
After such a heavy post, I thought I'd lighten the mood on my blog with pictures from The Big Fresno Fair. The boyfriend and I spent yesterday afternoon eating, playing in the kids' zone, viewing exhibits, and eating some more. Side note: deep-fried twinkies are so good! I love that it was just us yesterday. We haven't had time to ourselves in a while, which made yesterday even sweeter. Even in a sea of thousands, he makes me feel like the only girl in the world. Great, now I have Rihanna's "Only Girl in the World" stuck in my head.

Have You Ever Seen Someone Die in Front of You?

It was three o'clock in the morning when my mom woke me from a deep sleep. It took a while to register her words, but they hit me seconds later like a slap to the face. "There was a drive by shooting next door." Immediately I popped out of bed, messy pony tail and all, and rushed through the hallway, outside the front door, and into the yard. Flashing blue and red lights. A sea of panic-stricken twenty-somethings. Cries. Screams.

I walked to the neighboring house - my uncle's house - to greet the first person I could find. My cousin Ramiro was shirtless, barefoot, and spotted with blood. I gave him a quick hug as he exited the gates. I would've hugged him longer, but he was preoccupied with fighting his tears and searching for the next thing to do.

The next scene I saw is one I will never forget. Rene and Danny were laying on the ground, covered in blood, surrounded by friends and a policeman. I couldn't process the imagery before me. I couldn't make sense of them on the ground until I found my cousin Lizard crying on the phone to her brother JR. I reached for her and gave her the biggest hug I could give anyone in this world. I cried as she buried her head into my right shoulder. "I think Rene and Danny are gone. I think they're gone," she said to JR on the phone. Clueless about what to do next, I stood near a tree for a few moments as Rene and Danny received CPR.

"We're losing him....
His pulse is fainting...
The other is not too far behind."

Rene and Danny were like family to me. Even though they weren't my blood relatives (they were my cousins' cousins), they felt like a part of my family. We grew up together. We played games of tag, watched cartoons after school, and drank beer while listening to oldies, spanish, and country music play in the background.

Rene was twenty two and Danny fifteen when they were murdered on September 11, 2011. Two young men with their entire lives ahead of them. Two young men that will forever be remembered as kindhearted, fun, and hardworking.

For all we know, their deaths may serve as a purpose for something greater in the future. After all, they do say everything happens for a reason, right? But, as of now, it's challenging to find, or even accept, that reasoning. There's an unsettling feeling in the air, in our neighborhood, in my body. One that I can feel when I open my front door, or as a car drives by while walking my dog, or when I'm left with my thoughts right before bed.

With time this disturbing feeling will weaken, but it will never go away. However, the memories of Rene and Danny will last a lifetime. They will live on through our stories and the lives of their brothers, sister, parents, and cousins. They will never be forgotten.

So I ask again: Have you ever seen someone die in front of you? I hope your answer is no. I hope you will never experience the tragedy my family and friends endured that early Sunday morning. I hope you appreciate life as much as I do -- because it is a gift that can be returned in a heartbeat.

On the Tenth Floor

Living in California's Central Valley has it's advantages. I'm two hours from San Francisco, eat the best fruit in the world, and - my favorite advantage of them all - I get to see childhood friends. I've known Anthony and Milly since elementary school, so it's always a fun (read: crazy) time whenever we get together. Last Saturday we went to Downtown Fresno for Fresno Fashion Week's finale party. The bash itself was a big bust, but at least we enjoyed the view of the city and took pictures like it was nobody's business. After staying at The Grand 1401 for about an hour, we went to the Tower District to dance the night away like Raquel Zimmerman in a Lanvin ad.

P.S. I apologize for the poor picture quality, but it was more convenient to shoot with my iPhone since it's glued to my hand 24/7.

All summer long I've gravitated towards oversized, sheer tops. There's just something about them that make summer dressing so easy and comfortable. All I have to do is choose a top, slip a nude or black cami underneath, and pair with my favorite jeggings and shoes. Most of the time, said shoes are flip flops, but that's okay since I live in California, the motherland of flip flops. What does your summer uniform look like?

A Good Old-Fashioned Blog Post

It's definitely been a while since I've made one of these! Somewhere along the way of Fashion, Love, and Martinis' growth, I felt like I could not post without an outfit to share, news to break, or video to film. What happened to the days of sharing my life experiences with just words, no pictures or video needed?

Creating such standards for myself pushed me away from blogging. Even writing in my journal became a bit much. To be honest, I can barely recall the last time I cracked open my ruby red Smythson. To lose my enthusiasm for blogging/writing really threw me for a loop because I've loved the art since I was a kid. To misplace my passion for it, even if it was temporarily, really made me question the motives of my blog.

I got so caught up in feeling restricted about what I could post that I forgot why I started my blog in the first place. I created Fashion, Love, and Martinis in November of 2008 not only to show my style, but to reveal my lifelong relationship with my health and body -- and those that butted in on that relationship from time to time.

It's time to get back to basics. Don't fret; this doesn't mean the death of outfit posts or videos. It means the birth of a better blog. A blog where I can share my past and present experiences, personal style, and advocacy for self acceptance and fashion at any size.

I hope you'll join me for the re-birth of Fashion, Love, and Martinis. If you don't, just remember this: I never let my weight, size, or the number on a tag dictate my self-worth and style. I hope you will do the same.

Springtini

If there was ever an event fit for my blog, it would be this one. Each spring, a group of local businesses have a Springtini: a night of shopping, fashion (including shows for women and men), music, food sampling, wine tastings, and signature martinis. You know what makes Springtini even better? Each ticket comes with five martinis or beers of your choice. Yeah, I was in martini heaven.

I felt so glamourous that night, probably the most glam I've ever felt it my life. My makeup was perfect, my hair naturally wavy, and I wore a fantastic dress (City Chic Rachel Maxi dress) and fun accessories, including my new hat from Forever 21. I have to say, I looked pretty damn good that night. There were plenty of ~~straight-size~~ girls wearing maxi dresses, but I stood out from the crowd by a long shot. Now whether it was because of my weight or my outfit, I will never know. But I do know an impression was made, and it was a fabulous one at that.

I rarely discuss my relationship with my boyfriend on my blog, but I couldn't turn down a chance to write about it when Nicole from Style Me B.A.D. asked DC and I to be her couple of the month. I met Nicole through Sunglass Hut's Full Time Fabulous contest and we've developed a nice friendship ever since; thanks Twitter! Her blog, Style Me B.A.D., is about re-inventing the term "bad girl" by encouraging women to be beautiful, authentic, and determined. Great message, right? Now you can understand why I had to break my privacy rules just this once.

Beaming in Browns

They say brown should never be worn with black. Well I say it's time to break that age-old fashion rule once and for all. Brown and black can easily go together as long as the shades are complimentary and one has the confidence and curiosity to wear it. Curiosity is the attitude I had when Kmart approached me about reviewing their new plus size collection Love Your Style, Love Your Size (LYS).

Kmart and fashion aren't two things that naturally go together; so I let my curiosity get the best of me by accepting their offer. Even though one of the pieces, a reversible tank with a bold floral pattern, fit too snug around my stomach, the burly wood drape front sweater and black pieced jeggings were a good fit for my body and casual wardrobe. Note: the jeggings were big in the butt and leg until after I washed them. They're still a little long, but that's to be expected since I'm short.

I applaud Kmart for creating a trendy collection for the young plus size market. And I wish more mass retailers had done so when I was a teen. Growing up, it was difficult to find clothes suitable to my age and budding tastes since I was limited to Target and Lane Bryant. While LYS definitely has some kinks to work out, such as their sizing , they seem to be on their way to making a solid plus size collection. A collection that offers variety, affordability, and a positive message to love your size no matter the letter on a tag.

IGIGI Review: Nina Origami Dress

My size never stopped me from dressing fashionably -- just like winter weather never stopped me from wearing dresses. (Then again, I live in California so our winters are nothing compared to those of the Midwest and East Coast.) Dresses in the winter are fun, especially when they're as beautiful as this Nina Origami Dress from IGIGI by Yuliya Raquel.

My favorite part of the dress is the pleating, hands down. I've never worn a garment with such intricate design so the architecture instantly won me over. The V-neckline and soft fabric are close seconds as they elongate my short neck (oh, the problems of the petite) and feel great on my skin. And hello, the royal blue color is hypnotizing. It's cheerful, timeless, and the perfect color to usher in spring.

I love Cacique Intimates! It's one of the brands that helps me feel beautiful every day of the year. I've been a fan of the plus size intimates collection for many years, so I was happy they sent me the new sateen convertible plunge bra to review. Like I say in the video below, I really love this bra because it's an instant boob lift. It's like plastic surgery in a bra, minus the five thousand dollar tab and painful weeks of recovery.

Listen -- we all know beauty comes from within, but there's nothing wrong in feeling beautiful because of pretty lingerie. After all, a good outfit begins with the right foundation pieces, and luckily I can find those at Cacique/Lane Bryant.

I am my own Revolution

When I first heard about the Curvy Revolution Convention, I was very intrigued such an event was being produced. Rarely are women above a size two celebrated in mainstream media, let alone the glamourous city of Las Vegas. To have an event not only celebrate plus size women, but embrace, educate, and give them a platform to love and accept themselves was one I didn't want to miss.

I was so excited once I learned B. Scott and City Chic were holding a contest for a trip for two to the Curvy Revolution. Instantly my mind started creating ideas on ways to show B. how proud I am to be me -- a woman with confidence, curves, fat, and ambition. I was speechless when I discovered he chose me as the contest winner. "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god," were the only words I could say as I read congratulatory tweets and comments. Not only was I ecstatic about winning a trip to the convention, I was thrilled to meet B., a long-time preacher of self-love and acceptance, wear City Chic for the first time, and meet and network with vendors and fellow bloggers.

Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to experience any of this since my VIP prize pack was poorly handled by Keke Dillard, CEO of the Curvy Revolution, and her PR team. I refuse to go into exact details about who did what or what was said, just know my prizes were not delivered.

But there is always sunshine after a rainy day. I am so grateful for the wonderful customer service from City Chic and Lane Bryant. I'm also thankful for B. Scott and my friends on Twitter for their concern and support.

Often times in life things don't go as planned. We experience disappointments, frustrations, and the unexpected. But that is no reason to act irresponsibly and unprofessionally. If anything, such occurrences should propel one to do better, live better, and make the right decisions.

While the Curvy Revolution may have acted as a platform for plus size women, which I highly doubt considering the bad reviews I've heard from many professional and personal sources, I didn't need it to love and embrace who I am. I can do that all by myself because I am my own curvy revolution.

Five

Five years ago today I met Donald Chambers. Little did I know I was meeting my best friend, lover, and soulmate. Who knew we would fall in love, grow up together, laugh and even cry together? We certainly didn't. As similar as we are, we are also just as different -- which is why we make a great pair. We get each other's jokes (sarcasm should be our middle names), enjoy going out just as much as laying in bed on a Saturday night, and make it a priority to be completely honest with one another at all times. I am so lucky to have a man that truly understands me, supports and encourages me in all my endeavors, and most of all, loves me unconditionally. I love you, DC, and I can't wait to see where life takes us in five more years.

A Curvy Update

Where to begin, where to begin? Life's been crazy the last few weeks. I'm now a freelance Social Media Coordinator for four businesses, which means a lot of my time is spent online -- high five for getting paid to facebook and tweet -- and marketing to increase sales and exposure for local businesses. Side note: always try to buy local. It helps small businesses and communities as your taxes go directly to local funds and projects.

My next few paychecks will be going towards next weekend. What's so special about next weekend, you ask? Oh, nothing, just going to Vegas for The Curvy Revolution. I won an amazing VIP prize pack for two thanks to B. Scott, one of my favorite bloggers, and City Chic, the fabulous Aussie plus size retailer. For an entire weekend I'll be in Sin City with my dear friend Denise celebrating our curves with other plus size women. I'll be sure to take lots of pictures and video because I know so many of you want the inside scoop on this plus size experience.

And last but definitely not least, I have a new addition to my family: Coffee, an American Pitbull Terrier. We rescued her from my mom's boss because he was going to give her away. When my mom first told me we were getting a dog, my first reaction was to yell out, "WHAT!" proceeded by "What are we gonna do with a dog? That's an added expense." Little did I know Coffee would steal my heart the moment we met. Now she's always on my mind, so much so I hope my boyfriend doesn't get jealous. Who knew a dog could have such an effect on me, the least successful pet-owner I know, or I'd end up working in Social Media? It's strange the way life works out, but I guess that's the beauty of living. Until next time, stay fashionable.

I know what you're thinking, "Where the hell have you been?!" It's been almost three weeks since my last post; having school and multiple jobs will do that to you! Here's an outfit of the day as my way of apologizing for my absence. I wore a little black dress from Forever 21 -- trust me, I too was stunned to find a simple yet oh so chic dress in between crazy prints and kimono sleeves. Can I also mention how much I loved my makeup that day? I got it done at Sephora, but had no idea I would have the best makeup experience of my life. Finally a post with photos! I'm back with a look inspired by LuAnne of Weesha's World. The beautiful and stylish blogger wore a similar outfit months ago, inspiring me to re-create it on a slightly cool November day.
I love the masculine and feminine elements of this outfit. There really is nothing more machismo than a denim shirt. But all testosterone goes out the window when paired with an airy, pretty skirt. Its fun to embrace menswear-inspired pieces and pair them with romantic details like chiffon, lace, ruffles, and high heels. It will show all guys who's really the boss.

Tibi, Can You Hear Me?

I first spotted Tibi's lace and silk shorts in the November issue of ELLE magazine - and I've been obsessing over them ever since. Designer Amy Smilovic perfectly combined two of my favorite things (shorts and lace) into one chic package. I could picture myself wearing these shorts with black opaque tights, a blush pink tank and black blazer, my Aldo flats (seen here), and multiple layers of pearls for an ultra feminine look. I would own these beautiful shorts if they were made in my size or if I could squeeze into a size 12. Unfortunately, either of those options aren't likely to happen. So, for now, I'll keep obsessing and hoping Tibi, you'll hear me.

Risk Taker

This outfit will not seem like a risk to most people, but its more than extraordinary to me. Why, you ask? It was the first time I wore a belt in years. For so long I thought I was too fat to wear a belt. I believed wearing a belt made my stomach, the fattest part of my body, even larger, so I avoided the accessory at all costs. You could hand me the most beautiful dress in the world, and I would instantly place it back on the rack if it came with a belt.
Now, at the age of 25, I am finally learning to love my body and embrace the once feared accessory. I still have a fat stomach with an ever-present muffin top, but why should that stop me from looking and feeling great about myself? I took a leap of faith by purchasing my first belt since childhood, but perhaps the greatest and most rewarding risk we can all take is to love ourselves unconditionally. I'm willing to take that chance, are you?

Fashionable in Fresno

Let's be honest; Fresno isn't known for its fashion. When most think of the fifth largest city in California, agriculture, hot summer weather, and national jokes come to mind. Haven't we, the Central Valley, had enough of the jokes and poor recognition? Fresno is more than vineyards and farm animals. Fresno can be fashionable, too.

Enter Fashion Style Lounge. I've supported and participated in all six FSLs, and the most recent was no exception. My friend Amanda and I held a tweetup within the event for Fresno Twitter.com users (learn more about that here). It was great to meet local Tweeps and surrounded ourselves with fashion from independent designers and local boutiques. There were also runway shows, one inspired by man and animal and another featuring designs from Parris Harris, that proved Fashion Style Lounge truly is Fresno's "alternative fashion event."

Mi Abuelita

   "Vino 'Manda." Beatrice uttered those two words last week. Little did I know that was the last time she would mention me. I saw her not too long ago while she was in and out of sleep, fighting the morphine injected into her body. She was sick for most of 2010, but her condition reached a peak in late July. Doctors claimed she had two weeks to live, but she, being the strong and sometimes stubborn woman I know, surpassed those fourteen days with much strength.
   It's now October, and the resilience my abuela once had no longer exists. After a year long fight with illness and pain, Beatrice concluded her battle last night at the age of eighty nine. My abuela was, as previously stated, a strong, often stubborn, but always loving woman. She was the wife of my abuelo Alejandro, a mother to six boys and two girls, a grandmother to many, many, many grandchildren, and a business woman.
   I will miss her never-ending rants, red painted nails, and bright colored dresses. But I will miss seeing her on the porch and waving hello the most. She was one of many cornerstones in my large (in numbers) Mexican family that will forever be treasured. This post is dedicated to mi abuelita Beatrice. This outfit es por ti.

Womanity by Thierry Mugler

     What's your favorite perfume? Vera Wang's Princess is my number one fragrance, but it may lose its top spot to Womanity, Theirry Mugler's latest perfume. This is a bold statement for me to make because I'm extremely picky when it comes to perfumes. Case in point: I've used three in my lifetime - Clinique Happy Heart, Ralph Perfume by Ralph Lauren, and Vera Wang Princess. Now I can add Womanity to the list.
     Theirry Mugler's perfume is one of the best fragrances I have ever experienced. It's not too sweet or too strong. It encompasses floral and fruity scents on a mature level thanks to its savory notes. As silly as this may sound, the long-lasting fragrance makes me feel like more of a woman - which is, what I believe to be, Mugler's ultimate goal.
     Womanity, aside from being a beautiful perfume, strives to connect women to themselves and others. It wants to empower women around the world to embrace femininity and harness energy to be the best version of themselves. The beautifully constructed bottle is a constant reminder of these goals. When I look at it, I see the many faces of a woman - mother, wife, lover, daughter, professional, warrior. I see womanity.

     Twitter is a powerful thing. And now it's time to make it a lot more fashionable! An Open Letter to Target, Part II

Anyone who knows me, knows of my love for Target. When I'm out of Pantene Pro V, I'm off to Target. If I'm running low on Clean&Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets, I head to the bullseye yet again. Let's say its one week until an event and I don't know what to wear - well, maybe I'll shop at Target. While I'm grateful Target carries some plus size fashion, that doesn't mean I wholeheartedly admire every product.

     You see, shopping for clothes at Target is a hit or miss. There is no happy medium. Sometimes I'll find something fabulous, but often times I ask myself, "Is that really hanging on the rack?" Another question I've pondered - Why aren't plus sizes available in Target's popular designer collaborations?
     For years the mass retailer has teamed with some of the fashion world's most fun and creative designers. Problem is, these lines start at a small and end at an extra large. If you're lucky, you can make an extra large work for your body - provided a garment is made from a blend of stretchable fabrics (Hello, jersey).
     Bloggers and women everywhere have had enough. Spearheading the movement for change are Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista, Patrice of Afrobella, and Sarah Conley of StyleIT. Just last Friday, the ladies created the Add Plus Size Designer Collaboration to Target petition; a petition which has already garnered 1,411 signatures!
     Are you tired of plus size fashion limited to five clothing racks? Do you want designer collaborations to include extended sizes? Sign the petition to make Target designer collaborations a lot more fa(t)shionable!

Grease is one of my all-time favorite musicals. I grew up craving to be a Pink Lady - the pink jackets are fabulous - and lusting to date a T-Bird, which is probably inappropriate for a tender nine year old. Las Vegas is home to many things: neon lights, showgirls, and never-ending blackjack tables. Notice how plus size fashion is not one of them? The store's inventory is ever-changing since it carries a limited supply of sizes in each style (two 1X, two 2X, and two 3X). Once all sizes are gone, they never come back. This is great for the girl who would rather eat anchovies than wear the same thing as the girl next door.

Shopping can be hard work for fat girls. Voluptuous makes browsing for clothes easier than any store I've ever been to; apparel is arranged by color and style. Looking for a little black dress? Walk to the black and grey section. Want a pop of coral in your wardrobe? Head to the pink and red rack. Its just that easy.

The accessories are just as easy, but a lot more fun, to find. Hi! I'm back from my birthday weekend getaway. I would've updated sooner but it took a while to recover from my celebration. Let's just say nursing a hangover in a car for seven hours is not fun! I still had the time of my life, despite one too many shots of Belvedere. I spent the weekend shopping, drinking (obviously), and enjoying my last days as a twenty-four year old (side note: thank you all for the birthday wishes! You made my birthday even better.).
If you've read my blog for a while, you may remember my Forever Young post, in which I openly described my scares about turning a quarter-century. Well, its safe to say those fears are long gone. I now realize this new year of life can only enhance who I am and the opportunities that lie ahead. Turning twenty-five is not so bad after all.

How many of us have yellow in our wardrobe? I would've said, "not me!" if you asked a week ago. My answer changed once I laid eyes on this bright yellow tank by Faith 21. The Chanel-esqe gold chains and black trimming are to-die-for and the non-existant sleeves made the top that much more appealing. The last thing I want to wear is sleeves during this hot California summer!
I wore this look to my boyfriend's birthday bash on a warm Saturday night. I was the only one wearing something other than white or black. Needless to say, I happily stood out in the crowd by bringing a little more sunshine to the party and my wardrobe.

I'm a fan of anything that sparkles. Rhinestones, diamonds, crystals, and more; If it shines, its mine. When I set my eyes on Armani Privé's fall/winter 2010 couture collection, my jaw nearly dropped from all the sparkly goodness. Mr. Giorgio Armani designed gowns with bright shining crystals over warm, rich colors. Armani's collection wasn't as innovative as others (see: Dior's haute couture version of a flower shop), but it was definitely glamorous. I can't wait to see these dresses shine on the red carpet.

Hi! I'm so sorry I haven't updated the blog in weeks. Blame my new obsession, True Blood. The hit HBO series glued me to my television thanks to their incredible stories and southern charm. Ridiculously good looking vampires helps, too. Inspired by the show's intense colors and emotions, I created a makeup look any fashionable vampire would love. There are few people I trust shopping for me. One of the lucky few just happens to be my mother. As cliche as this sounds, she really is one of my best friends. We have a very honest and fun relationship. We talk to each other about anything - and I do mean anything - and enjoy spending time together. I love that she understands my personal style, too. She is, after all, part of the reason I am so picky with my fashion (and food). On her recent trip to Vegas, I asked her to buy me an accessory from H&M. Three days later, she returned with two headbands, two bundles of bracelets, a mini Eiffel Tower (I'm obsessed with Paris!), and a cute, pink piggy bank. See, my mom knows me too well! My mother always knows best.

So much of our lives are focused on numbers and letters. The scale reveals our weight; the tags on our clothes tell the size of our waists. I used to be ashamed of those numbers and letters in the sixth grade. I was eleven years old, two hundred and one pounds, and one of three fat girls in class. I remember using Wite-Out to camouflage the size on the clothing label just in case my tag popped out of my neckline during recess. I’d even remove tags with bright orange scissors or my small, chubby hands to avoid seeing them on a daily basis.

I made my way back to XL thirteen years later. But this time I was not embarrassed nor was I ashamed to say hello. I embraced the size with open arms because I know my self-worth is not determined by letters on labels or digits on a scale.

XL is no longer an enemy, but an ally. XL reminds me that while I am fat, I am also fabulous. Welcome back, XL, my closet missed you.

The Plus Side of YouTube

The spring semester is officially over, which means I now have more time to write and update the blog! I have some more exciting news; I got re-admitted to my university! You're probably wondering why I was disenrolled in the first place. Its actually a long story I plan to share in the near future. For now, I'd like to show you my new YouTube videos. I made two shopping hauls in response to the small population of plus sizes on YouTube. The fatshion blogging community is so large (no pun intended) and rapidly growing, which is cause to wonder why such a community hardly exists in a vast sea of vlogs. I know I'm not the best on camera, with my side glances as I think before I speak and overuse of the word, "like," but I continue to vlog because its fun, easier to do when I don't have time to write, and shows the Skinny-minnies of YouTube that fat girls have fashion and beauty skills, too.

Forever Young

As a child I sometimes longed for the day I turned fourteen. The double digit age meant entering high school and joining the cheer squad. At the uneventful age of nineteen, I could hardly wait to turn twenty one. It was at twenty one that I entered a world of newfound freedom. Granted, that freedom was the right to purchase alcohol, but it was freedom nonetheless. Fast-forward four years to 2010, where I am freaking out about turning twenty five. There is nothing exciting about being twenty five. Luckily there is one activity that defies age and guarantees excitement - shopping! My first purchase from ASOS has helped fight my quarter-life crisis. This coral skater skirt exudes playfulness and youth; two traits I fear losing as I near a quarter century. Ok, so maybe I'm being dramatic, but I don't care. Turning twenty five is scary. Thankfully I have this whimsical skirt - and a big glass of red wine - to calm my nerves.

I recently received an e-mail asking why I named my blog Fashion, Love, and Martinis. I'm really happy someone asked because I've always wondered if any of you have thought the same thing! Fashion, Love, and Martinis is more than just plus-and-straight-size fashion. Its also about events with family and friends, where there's almost a 100% chance you'll spot me with a martini, and my love/hate relationship with my health and body. My blog is a record of my life and aspirations to become the successful woman I know I am meant to be.

Today's post is a perfect example of my blog name! On April 22nd I spent the night immersed in fashion, love, and martinis at the Fashion Style Lounge in Fresno, California. My friend and mentor Falina Marihart created the fashion and beauty event in response to the Central Valley's growing talent. I love going to FSL because it really is one big, fashionable party. You can shop from local designers, get beauty tips/service from beauty pros, dance, eat, and drink all in one spot. Its also a great place to meet new people and network, which is crucial if you want to make your mark in the fashion industry.

P.S. Today I reached 200 followers on Google Friend Connect! I can't begin to tell you how happy and surprised I was when I saw that number. I hope you are enjoying the blog because you are all a big reason why I continue to update. Thank you all so much for following, reading, and commenting!

Stripes, Bows, and Red Lipstick

First of all, I have to say thank you to everyone that commented my last post! All of your comments made me so happy! I replied to some of them via e-mail. If you didn't receive an e-mail, please check the comments section of "Spring Awakening" for my reply.

This outfit was inspired by two new additions to my wardrobe: a navy/cream stripe top from Dorothy Perkins and jeggings from Yours Clothing. It was my first time ordering from the UK retailers, and I have to say I am very impressed with the quality and shipping from both stores. I paired the navy/cream top and jeggings with a white cardi to blend the two items together, all while minimizing the appearance of my love-handles. A cream headband, multi-colored charm bracelet, pointy-toe flats, and my Neverfull GM bag were the perfect, girly accessories for this outfit. We all know any outfit of mine isn't complete without red lipstick! I love red lips with anything blue because the contrast is so beautiful and always in style.

Spring Awakening

Spring is finally here! You know what that means? Out with my wool coat and in with all things floral. When making room for my springtime wardrobe, I had to find closet space for my current favorite dress. Just last month eShakti sent me a blue lace dress, appropriately named the "Floral Lace Illusion dress." I was immediately attracted to it because of the lace and the short length. Hey, fat girls can wear minis, too!
Both fat and skinny girls can shop at eShakti since they cater to sizes 0-26. They also customize clothing if need be. I decided against any tailoring because I wanted to judge the garment in its purest form. Surprisingly, the size 24 dress was a perfect fit for my body. Aside from the fit and pretty details (puffed sleeves and princess seams), the best part of the dress belongs to the polyester/spandex underneath the blue lace. The fabric acts as shapewear, which is what I need when wearing a bodycon dress. I highly recommend wearing a curve-hugging bodycon dress this season. They have the perfect elements for springtime: they're fresh, flirty, short, and fabulous. What more could a girl ask for?

This post is long overdue. Sorry about that! School has kept me very busy, but that shouldn't be a surprise. The inspiration for the outfit in this post should also be no surprise. I have a very feminine and romantic style, so its only natural I wore an ultra-girly look to celebrate my anniversary with my boyfriend. I paired a pink cardigan accented with lace, rhinestones, and a bow tie (three of my favorite things) with my favorite summer dress to show my appreciation for all things girly and my boyfriend of four years! This color block dress is a favorite of his.
To battle the chilly winter weather, and my love handles, I added opaque black tights that double as shapewear. I didn't accessorize much, with the exception of the bow headband, since the cardigan was the focus of the outfit. Yet, I did manage to squeeze another one of my favorite things into the look: my Louis Vuitton Pochette Accessories pouch. This is one of the very first LV pieces I purchased as a teen. Its also responsible for my great love of Louis Vuitton! The Pochette is so versatile because I can wear it as a wristlet or over the shoulder. Plus, I can fit so much into the pouch: lipstick, gloss, camera, BlackBerry, mini wallet, and car keys - all the essentials for a night out.

I complimented the neutral shadows and my pink cardigan with my current favorite lipstick and lipglass: MAC Speed Dial lipstick and Bountiful lipglass. I used bronzer and blush on my cheekbones to bring out the cool and warm tones in my skin and Fresh Umbrian Clay Freshface foundation for all over coverage.

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

It's good to break away from the usual. That is the mentality I had in mind as I ventured for new shoes this past Thursday. With a Nordstrom gift card in hand (thanks to Kim from A Life of Style), I was on the hunt for the perfect pair of nude shoes. To my surprise, I found them (picture here) yet I did not buy them. Rather, I was attracted to a pair of shoes neighboring near by.

I fell in love with the Steve Madden Patent Mavis shoes as soon as I spotted them. Not only are they the ideal shade of taupe, they are a step of out my style bubble*. As you can tell from past OOTDs, my style is focused on romantic details and classic shapes. But, as I laid my eyes on these shoes, I felt a little bit of edge emerge from my soul.
Shoes like this are very risqué for someone like me. Though I naturally favor a good pair of pumps, I could not resist these shoes. They give me the best of both worlds: the taupe is a soft and neutral color I can incorporate into my wardrobe yet their shape is daring and unexpected. They are unlike anything I have ever owned, which is why I love them so much! I guess these shoes were the perfect pair after all.

*Style Bubble: Another name for personal style. We have to burst out of our own style bubbles every once in a while.

It's no secret that I am a beauty-obsessed twenty-something with a soft spot for makeup. I recently shared my obsession with the readers of The Fat and Skinny on Fashion, a blog by fellow fashion journalism major Jai. I haven't shopped at the edgy plus size retailer in months; it felt good to go back! Surprisingly, they had many romantic and girly pieces to choose from. Maybe because of the upcoming Valentine's holiday? Whatever the reason, I hope their trend towards less spiky, sometimes scary, apparel continues.

I will be the first to admit I was shocked when I heard the news Uncle Karl would be photographing a plus model for V. You know, considering he dislikes fat people and all. I went to my local Lane Bryant/Cacique today to take advantage of their Semi-Annual Sale. My visit started with a bra fitting, then shopping with an associate for bras that fit my bust type. Less than an hour later, I walked out of Lane Bryant/Cacique with four bras for the fabulous price of $89. If it weren't for the sale, I would have paid $162! Needless to say, this sale is an amazing opportunity to purchase everyday bras and lingerie.

An Open Letter to Target

Dear Target Corporation,

Please make your designer collaboration lines in larger sizes. If its possible to make your very own private plus size label (Merona), then there is no reason why designer collaborations cannot do the same, right? Rodarte, Anna Sui, and the upcoming Zac Posen collection are just a few of the events in which myself and many other plus size women were excluded - and will continue to be until sizes change.
Do Fatshionistas not deserve to wear the same clothing as "straight size" customers? Its such a shame because you could have easily earned my dollars if pieces came in a 22/24.
Target, I hope to one day see a change in your ways. If not for me, then for upcoming plus sizes that deserve equal shopping opportunities.

On Dec. 9th, I purchased this bright red pea coat at the Red Circle Boutique*. I originally found the coat on Dec. 8th for $40 in a size too big. I don't blog about my music tastes much, but if you know me personally you must know how much I love and respect Jay-Z. I've been a fan of his since I was 12! The first time I heard Reasonable Doubt I knew I had found something extraordinary. His music was reminiscent of the songs I grew up listening to and, as a writer, his way with words mesmerized me more than any other author.

Today I celebrate the birth of Jay-Z: the emcee, the mogul, the man, and an inspiration in my life.
